Teenager dies after hole he digged on the beach collapses

His sister was left injured.

A teenager has died while digging a hole on a beach with his sister.

Levi Cavelry, 18, and his sister, 17, had been digging the hole using frisbees on a beach in Tom's River, New Jersey on Tuesday evening.

After digging 10 ft down, the hole caved in and sand collapsed on top of them, trapping them underneath.

Witnesses ran towards the scene and frantically started digging to try and save the teenagers.

Emergency crews and police managed to pull the girl out. Sadly, Levi died during the collapse.

“Levi was himself,” his father, Todd Cavelry, told The New York Post. “He was odd, he was quirky. He was not really concerned with what others thought.”

A statement posted to Facebook by Toms River Police Department reads:

"On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at approximately 4:09 PM, multiple police and EMS units were dispatched to the beach entrance near Seaview Road on the barrier island for reports of two teens trapped in the sand.

"The family was visiting from out of town and spent the afternoon at the beach. They teens were reportedly digging a large hole when it collapsed and trapped both of them.

"Emergency crews from neighboring towns also responded to the scene to assist in rescue efforts.

"The 17-year-old female victim was rescued and treated at the scene, but her brother Levi Caverly, 18 of Union Maine, tragically died in the collapse."

The death is being investigated. Authorities said no life guards were on duty at the time.

It comes as another young man tragically died in a similar accident in Utah over the weekend.

13-year-old Ian Spendlove was buried alive at the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park in Kanab, Utah, on Saturday after digging a six foot hole which collapsed on top of him.
