“He’s in a terrible state. Look, he’s alive.”
Kate Garraway has opened up about her husband Derek’s Covid-19 recovery.
During her appearance on Piers Morgan Life Stories, Kate revealed 54-year-old Derek was in a “terrible state”.
The heartbroken presenter said the virus has affected him from “the top of his head to the tip of his toe.”
Speaking to host Piers Morgan, the former Strictly star said Derek still can’t talk.
“He still can’t communicate, he still has issues with mobility. Fundamentally, he’s in a terrible state. Look, he’s alive.”
“His digestive system, his liver, his kidneys, his heart, his nervous system. We’re pretty sure that the inflammation did pass through the brain,” she explained.

He is still struggling to talk, but Kate said he has had minor breakthroughs.
She said he recently said “hello” and “thank you”.
“It’s moments like that that make you realise that he is in there,” she shared.
“And we’ve had others – he will turn to me and say, ‘I love you.’ He’s fought so hard to stay in this world,” Garraway continued.
She vowed to do everything she can to help him recover.
“I’m not giving up on him ever. He will have moments of clarity and it’s like he disappears again.”
Derek was diagnosed with Covid-19 in March 2020.
He spent over a year in hospital after contracting the virus. He spent several months in a coma.
Derek has since returned to his and Kate’s family home but still needs round-the-clock care.
