WATCH: The trailer for the new Matilda movie is here and it looks amazing

The film is based on the hugely successful West End musical.

The trailer for the upcoming adaption of Matilda has just landed, delighting musical theatre fans everywhere.

The Sony film is based on the West End and Broadway smash hit Matilda the Musical, which is based on Roald Dahl’s beloved 1988 children’s novel.

The movie will feature songs from the musical, which are written by Tim Minchin, and the musical’s screenwriter Dennis Kelly adapted the show’s script for the film.

The award-winning actress Emma Thompson will be stepping into the role of the frightening Miss Trunchball, a role that is typically played by a man on stage. Taking on the title role of Matilda is Alisha Weir, while the role of Miss Honey will be played by Lashana Lynch.

Matilda’s neglectful and shallow parents – Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood – will be played by Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough, respectively.

As the trailer shows, the look and feel of the film are markedly different from the 1996 film which starred Mara Wilson as an American Matilda. However, everything from the costuming to the choreography bears a striking resemblance to the stage show.

Matilda the Musical first hit the West End in 2011, where it still runs today at the Cambridge Theatre in London. As well as receiving widespread critical acclaim and box office sales, the musical scooped up seven Olivier Awards in 2012, which was, at the time, the most awards won by a single show. The next year, the show transferred to Broadway and closed after 1,555 performances in 2017.

The film adaptation of the musical will be coming to cinemas in the UK and Ireland on 2 December, just in time for Christmas. Then, over the holidays, Netflix will release it on streaming for international audiences, though the UK and Ireland will not be included in this release.
