Mum yelled “Why didn’t I put their seatbelts on” after losing her two kids in car crash

Her two children were killed last summer.

A mum was heard shouting “why didn’t I put their seatbelts on?” after her two children were killed in a car accident.

35-year-old Mary McCann was sentenced to 4 years in prison after she was caught drink-driving.

She will spend 49 months in prison.

She has also been banned from driving for 7 years and two weeks.

The mum-of-four was found guilty of two counts of causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drink.

Last summer, the mother crashed into a lorry on the M1 near Milton Keynes.

The horror accident occurred after 11 pm on August 9th, 2021.

Her 4-year-old daughter Lily McCann was killed after being thrown from the car.

Her son Smaller Peter McCann, aged 10, was also thrown around the back of the car and was found slumped over inside.

The judge said the children would not have died if they had been wearing seatbelts.

She was driving 72mph in a 60 zone.

The mum tried to avoid a lorry when she moved into the same lane but ended up colliding with it.

She crashed into the rear of the lorry and her children were then thrown from the vehicle.

The lorry driver suffered whiplash but the judge stressed that he did not do anything wrong.

A third child was also in the car, but they were not badly injured.

The judge said the mother will carry this guilt with her for the rest of her life.

After the crash, a witness heard the mum shout, “God, why didn’t I put their seatbelts on?”

The mum is currently suffering from complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

As he handed out the sentence, the judge said, “The message must go out: don’t drive under the influence of alcohol.”
