Attention parents: Here’s a technique you can use if your kids interrupt you

Melissa Carton

I am the only introvert in my household.

I live with three very chatty characters and trying to get a word in edgeways can prove to be tough.

This is particularly the case with my son who insists on constantly interrupting me whenever I try to make a phone call or talk to someone else in the house.

I know I’m not alone in this but apparently, there is actually a way to stop your child from talking over you when you’re trying to say something.

If you find yourself in a situation where you’re having a conversation but your child is looking to talk to you, teach them this trick.

Tell them that by putting a hand on your arm, you’ll know that they require your attention. The simple action will signal to you that they wish to speak to you.

And in return, signal to them that you know they’re there and want to speak to you, by putting your hand on top of their hand or back.

The technique is reassuring to your child and lets the parent hold a conversation without hearing a constant barrage of “Mum, mum!” or “Daddddy!”

This is something I’m definitely going to give a go with my son when I get home.

I wonder if it would work on my husband too…
