The times, they are a changing – when it comes to how we talk to our kids abut sex, that is.

Explains the birds and the bees to your offspring used to consist of an awkward chat and potentially giving them a book at the onset of puberty but for many parents, that won’t cut it anymore.

Lots of us are choosing to take a more proactive approach to ‘the talk’, often opening the conversation earlier and taking a more pragmatic stance than simply urging them to put it off for as long as possible.

Dax Shepard has opened up about how he’s planning on tackling the subject with his own daughters.

“Currently, I’m of the opinion, I’m super pro sex,” he said while chatting with Gwenyth Paltrow on his Armchair Expert podcast this week.

“I am anti having sex to get approval.

“I am anti having sex to get someone to like you or to gain status in a social circle, but if my daughters are horny and they have decided they want to have sex, I am very pro sex.”

We reckon he makes a good point. Sex is often interpreted to young people, especially girls, as problematic.

Would it really be so bad to frame it as a positive experience by arming our kids with the information and support they need (at the appropriate age, of course)?

He and wife Kristen Bell revealed last month that they’ve already started to have ‘the talk’ with their five-year-old Lincoln when she asked where babies come from.

The couple are also parents to four-year-old Delta.
