How we potty trained our daughter in just three days

Miracles do happen.

My daughter is a legend..

My plan was to start potty training Eva next week when Jacob goes to primary school and I had a bit of time to dedicate to her.

However it just occurred to me last week that it might be easiest to do it at a time when we’re all together and not rushing out the door for drop offs and pick ups, and could really concentrate on it.

So we started on Thursday and as of today, she is without a nappy and happily letting us know when she needs to go to the loo.

Here’s how we did it:

Day 1:

I introduced her to the potty (Jacob’s old Thomas The Tank Engine one, poor unloved second child) and whipped her nappy off.

Then I held my breath.

Within ten minutes we had wee on the floor and her older brother was writhing around in disgust.

I placed her on the potty and simply explained to her that this is where she’d be going today.

For the rest of the day, I just asked her every 10 minutes or so if she needed to go, and when she did, I placed her on the potty.

When we had success, we got very busy telling her how amazing she was and we all got into a cheerleading procession to the toilet where we said ‘bye bye!’ to her wee or poo as we flushed it down.

There were many high fives on Thursday.

Day 2:

Rather than let her run around completely nude on Day 2, I put a pair of underpants on her but again, no nappy.

When she needed to go, I helped her get used to pulling down her pants, we both wiped her down after wees and poos and helped pull the pants back up.

Again, we heaped the praise on and the cheerleading procession morphed into a Conga Line to the main toilet.

Oh yes, we are now a musical poo-praising family.

Eva was so pleased with herself that she asked to go to the toilet rather than go in her nappy when we were putting her down to bed.

We knew we were onto a winner…

Day 3:

At 6.45am, Miss Eva woke us to tell us that she would need our assistance in going to the toilet.

She wanted that nappy removed and she wanted it removed now!

Although she just turned 2 in July, we knew she was ready for this next step because she has been telling us for a while when she is about to go for a poo and we have been placing her on the loo at bath time on and off for a couple of months now, to get her used to the idea.

She is now SO delighted with herself that she has accomplished this cool new trick that she spent an hour and a half at granny and grandad’s house today with no accidents.

Our little legend just let them know when she needed to go and they brought her to the toilet each time.

Another job off the list!
