“Mammy, Mammy, Mammy” Why Do They Keep Calling Me?!

Sharyn Hayden

I am on the verge of a ‘Stop Calling My Name!’ nervous breakdown.

I know I will miss it when my son and daughter no longer want to have anything to do with me when they are teenagers and I am “sooo embarrassing“.

And I know that when that happens, I will be writing another piece with the headline; ‘Why Don’t They Bother Calling Me Any More?!’

But for now, in this moment, I need the ‘Mammy Mammy Mammy Mammy Mammy Mammy’ calling to ease off a bit.

Just for a few minutes a day would be lovely, so that I have a chance to get rid of this headache.

Jacob is five and a half and so he’s been at it for ages. We asked him if he would use the hand on my arm trick instead of interrupting me all the time and he duly told us to shove it.

He decided that he would rather put his hand up in the air instead, as if asking teacher a question in school.

And although I’d be completely mortified if he ever does that in public (in case anyone thinks I’m a total authoritarian) – right now, it’s actually a welcome relief.

My daughter Eva is almost three and has not only joined Jacob in his Mammy calling, she has now started doing it in tandem.

So my son will say my name for attention and just as I’m saying ‘Yes, Jacob?’, Eva will chime in with ‘Mamma! Mamma!’ straight away, which she then keeps on doing until I answer her which in turn, pisses Jacob off because he thinks I’m ignoring him.

Send wine, would ya?!
