Steve Martin says he’s a better dad for having his first child at 67

Steve Martin has admitted that becoming a father at 67 made him a better dad.

The actor and comedian may be well-known for his roles as a dad in Father of the Bride and Cheaper by the Dozen, but he only had his first child four years ago.

The 71 year-old told AARP Magazine that he wouldn’t have been a good dad when he was younger.

“I think if I’d had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father because I would have misplaced my attention on my career,” he said.

Steve married his second wife, Anne Stringfield, in 2007 and the couple welcomed a little girl in 2012.

He went on to say that being a dad to his now four-year-old daughter is “fantastic”.

“I am very forthcoming with her, and it’s great. She’s giving me way more than I’m giving her.”

He also admitted that he aims to keep fit for his family.

“I do exercise, but gently. I go on a treadmill and listen to a novel or watch television. I lift weights, but I just do my chest and arms.

“I do it for myself but I do it for them, as well.”
