Victorian parents were the last to embrace the floral name for all it was worth.

But among the Violets and the Gladiolas, the Camellias and Magnolias, there are plenty of garden variety names that are primed to make a very cool comeback.

Here are 10 of our favourite botanical choices: 

Aster

A direct adoption of the Greek astêr, meaning “star”, Aster is also the name of a type of daisy.

 

Clover

A symbol of good luck, the four-leaf clover is also native to Ireland.

Fleur

Meaning ‘flower’ in French, this is currently a popular choice in Holland, the home of the tulip

Flora

The Roman goddess of flowers and spring, Flora is a gorgeous name for a summer baby.

Ianthe

Favoured by writers (poet Shelley chose it for his daughter) Ianthe is a Greek name meaning ‘purple flower’.

Jonquil

The jonquil is a narcissus with clusters of small fragrant flowers, so beautiful is its hue it even has a shade of yellow named after it.

Linnéa

A plant named after the esteemed 18th century Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus, this was the seventh most popular name for girls born in Sweden and Norway in 2008.

Posey

More commonly uses as a nickname for Josephine, Posey could be a sweet alternative to the more common Rosie.
