This dad’s adorable homemade birthday present will literally warm your heart

Sophie White

I always have great intentions of crafting beautiful homemade gifts for my son.

For the most part, however, any thing I make for him from pillow forts to cards to cake is demolished and then flung on the floor. “You’re making it hard for me to be the parent I want to be,” I tell him.

This dad got crafty for his daughter’s fifth birthday and made her a 50 metre-long drinking straw while she slept in the garden at their holiday home. The straw ran a wacky course (even spelling ‘happy birthday’ en route) from the table right down to the spot where he was snoozing.

With the deluge of toys and gadgets that kids receive these days, it’s important to remember that sometimes making a memory they will cherish forever is more important than stuff.

“Instead of giving her more toys I wanted to give my daughter a happy memory. For her 5th birthday, I created a (nearly) 50 meter crazy drinking straw, all over our holiday home. She especially loved tearing the complete construction down.”

“Stop buying your kids crap toys. Believe me, memories last longer than any toy (except Playmobil, you can never go wrong with Playmobil).”
