Toddler tantrums at teeth-brushing time? Try these 5 handy tips

Alison Bough

You know things aren’t always going to be easy when you have a toddler, but fighting with them about brushing their teeth is one daily battle you could do without.

If you’re struggling to persuade your toddler to follow a daily dental hygiene routine, you’re not alone. Have a go at tackling those tooth brushing tantrums head on with these tried and tested tips:

1. Let them choose their own brush

Whether it’s electric, glow in the dark or Disney-themed variety, let your toddler choose their own toothbrush and toothpaste. You might be surprised by just how influential Mickey Mouse can be when it comes to dental hygiene.

2. Take turns

Try letting them brush your teeth, in exchange for letting you brush theirs. This is a brave move, we know, but one that could be worth all the pain (and bruised gums) if it pays off.

3. Involve the toys

Buy a spare (cheap) toothbrush for their favourite toy. Getting Princess Sophia in on the act might just persuade a stubborn toddler to open wide and get brushing.

4. Make it fun

Make brushing time a fun activity that you do together. You could pretend to play dentist and have them lie on your lap while you brush their teeth; or try suggesting a competition to see who can brush for the longest time.

5. Use books & apps

Help is at hand, in the form of books and apps. A few of the HerFamily team’s favourites include:

  • Oral B has a free Disney magic timer app that helps encourage reluctant children to get brushing.
  • Brush, Brush, Brush! by Alicia Padron is a cute little book that addresses the subject of brushing teeth, through rhymes.
  • Open Wide: Tooth School Inside by Laurie Keller combines interesting facts with a fun story, which will help inspire stubborn children at brushing time.
