We Are SO Making These DIY Summer “Snow” Globes This Week

Trine Jensen-Burke

If you, like us, are on a steady countdown towards the end of the school year by now, and collecting DIY projects to fill the next two months like there is no tomorrow, then this is for you:

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE those souvenir snow globes and have dragged them home from all corners of the globe. (Floating markets in Bangkok snow globe anyone? Byron Bay surfing snow globe? You name it; I have a snow globe stashed away in a drawer somewhere from it).

Anyway, it tuns out, it is not all that complicated to make your own snow globes, which is why my craft-loving heart fluttered a little when I came upon these totally adorable summer-themed ones, complete with palm trees and flamingos.

I just know my little girl is going to love to sit down for an afternoon of DIY to make these ones!

Supplies

  • a mason jar (or any glass jar with lid that will work)
  • summery plastic figurines (here are the flamingos used in these pictures; the palm trees and swans you will probably find similar to in a local crafts store, or try Tiger or even Sostrene Grene (in Dun Laoghaire or Blanchardstown)
  • blue glitter
  • glycerin
  • hot glue gun

The steps

  1. Remove the lid from your mason jar. Using a hot glue gun, glue the figurines down onto the inside of the lid. If your jar has a narrow mouth, make sure to congregate the figurines toward the center of the lid so that they will easily fit inside.
  2. Fill your jar almost to the top with water, and then add a pinch of glitter and a couple drops of glycerin to make the glitter float.
  3. Screw your lid back onto the jar, give it a good shake, and voila!—you have yourself a summer snow globe.

How cute are these?! Perfect as a party project for a little girl’s birthday bash (I would say from age five and up!), and then they get to bring their snow globe home as a present at the end.
