‘Yes, I cuddled her when she cried…’ one mum’s powerful response to being judged

Gillian Fitzpatrick

People are just trying to help – but being told a dozen different things by a dozen different more experienced mums can take its toll.

And most of us know that there is a fine line between friendly advice… and being judged.

Because when you have a precious new baby and you’re finding your feet, there will be an awful lot of people that will outright tell you you’re doing something ‘wrong’.

It can be difficult to deal with, not to mention pretty devastating too.

However, blogger Gylisa Jayne has now addressed her critics in a powerful way. Taking to her Facebook page, the mother-of-one says that when her daughter was just a few weeks old, “people started telling me things…”

“They told me that she needed to self soothe. Or she’ll be dependant on me for everything.

“They told me to ignore her cries, because they were for manipulation.

“They told me not to breastfeed for too long, not co sleep for ease, not to carry her when she was clingy.”

Gylisa, who is based in Cornwell in the UK, adds that so many people made her feel that her way “was the wrong way”.

And her response is empowering: “I cuddled her every time she cried. I reassured her every time she was scared. I held her hand when we went somewhere new. I carried her every time she was clingy.

“And I want to tell everyone that made me doubt my way: You were all wrong. She is little, she is fierce. She is independent. She is brave.  She is secure, knowing that I’ll be there, if she wants.

“I’m glad we didn’t listen.”
