Your baby at 5 weeks: Week-by-week guide to pregnancy

HerFamily

Welcome to week 5 of your pregnancy!

This week, your baby is as big as an apple seed. Here’s what else you can expect this week.

Your baby

Your baby is like a tiny tadpole about the size of an apple seed, which has already divided into three microscopic layers. The inner layer will become the liver, lungs and digestive system. The middle layer develops into the baby’s kidneys, sex organs, bones, muscles and heart. The nervous system, eyes, hair, and skin will all be formed by that outer layer. Impressive!

There are even teeny tiny buds where the arms and legs will appear.

You

Those boobs are getting sorer, and possibly bigger. Smells that never bothered you are suddenly offensive, or perhaps you even feel a tad — or very — queasy.

Are you peeing more as hormonal changes fill your bladder quicker? And is that another wave of exhaustion sweeping over you — at 4pm? Extreme tiredness is often the first indicator that you are pregnant. Think jet lag layered on top of sleep deprivation.

The first trimester tiredness can be quite baffling, as, at this early stage of pregnancy, there is not much visibly happening yet.

However, your body is working hard and it’s important to keep your energy levels up. Feel revitalised with an energising juice or smoothie. ‘This Turmeric Smoothie Is The Perfect Potion For Tiredness’
