10 Must-Have Maternity Wear Pieces This Christmas Party Season

Amanda Cassidy

As someone who has been pregnant every Christmas for three years, I can sympathise with your ‘what the hell will I wear’ dilemma as the festive party season kicks off.

But on the plus size (sorry) you will have the perfect excuse to swamp your turkey belly with swathes of pretty fabric and every excuse to put your feet up on the couch all day. And that is pretty much exactly what Christmas is about.

From comfy Christmas day pj’s to party flats, we have searched through the best the web has to offer in terms of smart, sparkly, cosy and versatile for you this December.

So punch up your preggo wardrobe with these HerFamily picks:

1. Boho Mama-in-waiting

It is a comfy twist on the little black dress. This embroidered shift dress isn’t cheap at €113 but we could see this striking tunic getting a roll out post-pregnancy too. It has wide cropped sleeves and is designed especially to fit through all stages of pregnancy. The stiff fabric give it structure and it zips up at the back. Perfect with long black boots or sparkly ballet pumps. Available here

2. Gold Shoes

Just because you are growing a human doesn’t mean you cannot wear fancy shoes. In fact, this is the part of your body you will probably want to emphasise the most. These lace-up flats are the perfect Christmas day shoes and I do not use that statement lightly. They would look fabulous with your maternity jeans and a flowy top or with a below-the-knee pleated skirt. These gold lovelies are around €23 and available here

3. Pretty Pj’s

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without a fancy pair of jammies. These v-neck, stretch waist pyjamas will keep you cosy all week. They are bump-friendly as well as being pretty and feminine and sure beats wearing your partner’s t-shirts. This navy matching set is €37 and available to buy here

4. Green Goddess

What’s green and shiny and makes you and your bump feel amazing? This dress of course! Dress it up with stylish shoes and jewellery for some blooming glamour. We picked this because it is affordable, formal and compliments any size bumps. It is a nice length for those who don’t want to expose their pins and modest enough to feel comfortable at your Christmas office party, a night out with your friends or simply visiting relatives. It is €50 and available here.

5. Oriental Casual

A nice pair of black tights and boots will make this nice shirt-dress the ideal Christmas week visiting outfit. It is smart enough to prove you are still prepared to make an effort with yourself but comfy enough to not want to rush back to the couch after thirty seconds of doing anything. On sale for €29 and it is available here

6. Anyone for tea?

I fully appreciate that we are having quite an oriental moment here, but look at this floral tea dress and how pretty the colours are. It ticks my box (not to be rude) because the upper arms are covered. It is short enough to add drama and distract from all the muffin top. Subtle make-up with a pop of pink lippy will help you feel great this Christmas in this guna. It has a round neck and button shoulder detail. Cost? €46 and available here

7. Wrap up your most precious gift

A smart coat instantly adds sophistication. This soft grey belted beauty will see you through the formal season and beyond. While a maternity coat is sometimes considered an unnecessary luxury, sometimes you just don’t want to look like a whale stuffed inside a dolphin stuffed inside a turkey. *actual phrase used to describe me one year.

This coat with shawl lapels is €53 and available here

8. Glitter ball

Create your own moving gitter ball with this specially designed maternity skirt that just screams ‘I still love to party.’ It will doll up any outfit, just add a black jumper and black stillettos for the more adventurous of mums-to-be. The best part? This lovely creation is only around €13 euro and available here. You’re welcome.

9. Layer queen

You may not necessarily look like the model in this picture if you wear this lovely knit poncho but things to keep in mind; she is probably 21, she probably has a pillow stuffed up her top, and at the end of the day, who really wears a fedora. Honestly?

However, there is no denying that this top is ideal for those who are expecting. Layering will help you feel comfortable throughout the day, it is a great way to mix and max outfits, it will carry through if you decide to feed your baby yourself and will help with the temperature fluctuations that come hand in hand with pregnancy. This lovely navy knit is €49 and available here

10. Culottes of love

ok, she is back. And she is rocking these grey tailored maternity culottes. My sources tell me that these pants are a great way to elongate your legs while also being very comfy and, of course, smart. These bad boys are €30 euro and available here

So there you go. Ten options for your party preggo wardrobe. It may be a tough time to be pregnant during party season when you want to avoid booze and heels, but take solace in the fact that you can eat turkey and roasties with abandon, you can fill up on pudding and cheeseboard (pasteurised of course!) and nobody can force you to play Wii or tidy up the wrapping paper because you will be firmly plonked on the couch in your fancy culottes.

Merry Preggy Christmas!
