Avocado bathrooms: the 10 interior design trends that devalue your home the most

Alison Bough

Research into the most hated décor trends has revealed that wood panelling, avocado bathroom suites, and built-in-wardrobes over the bed are the fixtures most likely to put homebuyers off.

According to a study carried out by Bathrooms.com, one in six homebuyers would look to knock at least five grand off the purchase price of a property if it still had an outdated avocado bathroom suite. Six percent of 25-34 year olds said they would seek a price reduction of at least ten grand if there was a retro green toilet in the house.

Just over one per cent of those surveyed said they still have one of the notorious avocado suites lurking in their lav. However, three out of four people stated that if they bought a new home with this 70s feature, it would be the first thing they’d rip out.

A fifth of homeowners confessed that they’ve never updated their bathroom, and around a quarter admitted to being embarrassed by their outdated bathroom when their friends come over to visit.

It wasn’t just dodgy-coloured bathroom suites that made the offending list; 46% of homebuyers said they wouldn’t buy a property if it still had old fashioned wood panelling and built-in wardrobes over beds were also declared a décor disaster.

The 10 interior design trends most likely to devalue your home are:

1. Wood panelling
2. Avocado bathrooms
3. Built-in bars
4. Woodchip
5. Artex ceilings
6. Heavily patterned carpet
7. Textured wallpaper
8. Crazy paving
9. Brick fireplaces
10. Built in wardrobes over the bed
