It seems fitting that Spanx should launch its active wear range during the Covid-19 pandemic. Firstly, because exercise gear is all we are wearing right now. And secondly, because we’ve been eating so much (damn you, banana bread) that we are definitely going to be in need of some support. Spanx to the rescue – as always.

The new Spanx Active launched in Ireland this week and is available from Brown Thomas and Arnotts.

There are two elements to the collection, the Booty Boost range which is designed for working out in and the Every.Wear range which is made for more gentle everyday activity.

Metallic stripe leggings €98, bralette €68

The leggings in the Booty Boost range have a contoured waistband, and the makers say they’ve been engineered “to give you the best-looking bum”. The Every.Wear leggings, meanwhile, have a waistband free design to allow more range of easy movement.

Both collections give that lift and sculpt effect that Spanx is known for, and use performance fabrics with in-built stitch and moisture-wicking to ensure wearers are comfortable whatever their activity.

The idea of having your Spanx on show might sound somewhat horrifying, but the brand has previously moved into producing outwear was well as suck-you-in undergarments. Their leggings were a smash success, particularly in the faux leather finish which are many a fashion editor’s best-kept secret.

Pocket leggings €118, bralette €58

That same faux leather finish is used in the active collections, and looks particularly great on the sports bras which come in different styles suited to high and low intensity workouts. We’re also loving details like the phone-sized pocket on the outside of some of the leggings.

Other fabric choices in the collections include metallics, gloss, mesh and side stripes. And if you prefer a more muted look for your gymgear, there’s plain black leggings available too.

Price wise, the Spanx Active collection is not cheap cheap, but it’s comparable to other ranges made with high performance fabrics. And if you’ve ever invested in real Spanx, you’ll known that you get the quality that you pay for.
