So THAT’S why she missed the Oscars! Natalie Portman has had her baby

Gillian Fitzpatrick

Actress Natalie Portman along with her husband Benjamin Millepied have welcomed a new baby – a little girl.

The bundle-of-joy is a sister for the Hollywood couple’s five-year-old son, Aleph.

And we just ADORE the name: Amalia. It’s a name that is in particular popular in Germany, France, and Greece.

People.com has now confirmed that Amalia arrived on February 22; that was just four days before this year’s Academy Awards took place.

Which explains why 35-year-old Ms Portman, a nominee for her performance in Jackie, did not attend (we can’t say we blame her!).

“Natalie Portman and her husband Benjamin Millepied welcomed a baby girl, Amalia Millepied, on February 22,” her rep has stated in confirming the good news. “Mother and baby are happy and healthy.”

Shortly before the ceremony, Natalia said in a statement: “Due to my pregnancy, I am unable to attend the Academy Awards.

“I feel so lucky to be honored among my fellow nominees and wish them the most beautiful of weekends.”

The award on the night went to Emma Stone for her role in La La Land.

Ms Portman and Mr Millepied, 39, were married in 2012 three years after meeting on the set of Black Swan. Natalia’s role in that film earned her her first Oscar win.

She attended the 2011 Academy Awards less than four months before giving birth to her first child, and has more recently also been hitting the red-carpet circuit while pregnant.
