This mum is furious after finding Calvin Klein padded bras for six-year-olds

Can we just stop with the sexualising of children, please?

As many parents know, it can sometimes be difficult to find clothes that are appropriate enough for their children to wear.

Companies often begin making more adult-style clothing for children, particularly girls, at quite an early age. Even in the children’s section, you can easily find a pair of low-waisted jeans or a selection of crop-tops.

However, this usually doesn’t become a major problem until around the age of 12.

But there are always exceptions.

Mum Angela Fellars posted her horror to Facebook after she found size 6X bras in the children’s underwear section.

In children’s clothing, sizes are done according to age. So a size 6 and 6X would be designed to fit an average six-year-old. You know, those six-year-olds who absolutely do not need to be wearing padded bras.

Most people on the Facebook post were equally as outraged as Angela.

However, some pointed out that size doesn’t necessarily equal age and that some girls who are older might still wear a size 6X.

Perhaps an answer to that, though, would be to have smaller sized bras in the adult section, rather than making an adult venture into the children’s section to find something that fits her.

Other parents pointed out that the padding stops nipples from showing through the child’s top.

But why is that necessary? They’re kids. Six-year-old boys have the same problem but they don’t have padded bras to hide the fact.

Maybe an argument can be made for a little bit of padding to avoid chafing but this much padding is excessive.

One user argued that she understands the point made about hard nipples and accepts it but that these were properly padded bras, with “padding that gives them a full cup to 2 cups larger.”

Of course, every girl develops at a different pace and we don’t want to leave girls who develop breasts early without options. But a bra as padded as these puts forward an body image that could be damaging for a growing child.

There is so much pressure on girls to look a certain way and they will no doubt feel that pressure as they get older. Surely we should try to keep them free from that pressure for as long as possible?
