Apparently, we should be washing our scrunchies at least once a month

I've literally never washed any of my scrunchies.

Shook.

We’ve all enjoyed the return of the scrunchie. The “uncool” hair accessory was deemed completely over by Carrie Bradshaw back in 2003 when an entire plotline was dedicated to how dismal scrunchie culture was – “No woman who works at W magazine and lives on Perry Street would be caught dead at a hip downtown restaurant wearing a scrunchie,” the protagonist bemoaned.

Thankfully for us, Sex And The City wasn’t always on the money when it came to fashion and the scrunchie resurgence began in earnest a couple of years ago with a powerful comeback. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve enjoyed it as much as the next nineties kid, but something popped up recently as I mindlessly scrolled through TikTok that left me shocked and ashamed.

DID YOU KNOW that we should be washing our scrunchies regularly? I witnessed a TikToker casually throwing all of her scrunchies into the washing machine and reminding us mere mortals that we should be washing them on a monthly basis.

I, of course, decided to do a little bit of digging to see how accurate this was.

It’s quite accurate.

Depending on the fabric of the scrunchie involved and how often you wear them, they can collect dirt and oil quite easily, we sweat into them (particularly over the last few days) and we should be giving them a good rinse every once and a while.

So, now that we’re all resigned to giving them a good wash, what’s the best way to go about it?

I’ve seen some recommendations to simply do the old warm water and bowl trick, a standard washing machine spin will also do the job, I even spotted some people clean them with shampoo. If in doubt, follow the instructions on the tag and wash them as you would any other article of clothing.

Right, I’m off to wash all my scrunchies and rethink everything I’ve ever known about life.
