“Should I let 17-year-old son’s girlfriend sleepover?”

Laura Cunningham

“Just not sure what to think”

Do you let your teenagers’ significant others stay the night? It’s a question a lot of parents have to ask themselves at some stage.

One mother who is struggling with the decision said: “He’s 17 and a half and she’s 16. They’ve been together about 6 months and she’s lovely. He asked if she can stay tonight as they want to go somewhere together tomorrow. He’s my first born so feeling a bit unsure.”

Comfortable enough that her son has an intimate relationship with his girlfriend, the mum’s question is about whether it should be happening at home: “I know they have sex and we’ve had a chat about respect and contraception.”

Things have changed since most of us were younger, should we be moving with the times? “My mum never have let my boyfriend’s sleep in the same room as me even when I was at university and I remember it made me feel awkward, but obviously they’re younger than I was then. Just not sure what to think.”

What do you think? There’s no right or wrong answer here, but we’d love to know what you’ve decided or are planning to do in your house.
