Their daughter was born a month ago.

Samira Wiley, who plays Moira in The Handmaid’s Tale, has welcomed her first child with her wife Lauren Morelli.

The couple announced the birth of their daughter, George Elizabeth, on Instagram yesterday.

Morelli, who kept her pregnancy hidden from the media, gave birth on 11 April.

Wiley shared an adorable photo of George with her followers on social media yesterday.

In her caption she wrote:

“Happy 1st Mother’s Day to my beautiful wife, who four weeks ago today after labouring for almost 3 days gave birth to our first child –  our gorgeous daughter George.”

She continued: “Welcome to the world babygirl. We love you and we thank you for giving us the best 1st Mother’s Day two ladies could ask for!”

Wiley and Morelli have been married since 2017. The couple met on the set of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, where Morelli worked as a screenwriter while Wiley played the role of Poussey Washington.

Morelli came out as gay in 2014. In an essay for Mic, the writer explained that working on the series helped her affirm her sexuality after being married to a man.

She wrote: “After lugging around a basket full of shame and guilt for the last year, there was a lightness that came with realizing that I could choose to replace my negative framing with honesty and grace.

“I am now out to my family, my friends and most of my co-workers on Orange.”

She continued: “Now, when I am in the writers’ room or on set, I no longer feel like I am stuck in the middle of two truths. I belong because my own narrative fits in alongside the fictional stories that we are telling on the show: stories of people finding themselves, of difficult paths and of redemption.”
