Pub tycoon claims the nightclub scene is officially dead

Niamh Maher

It’s a tale of success on JOE’s business podcast this week as the panel dive head first into the Irish Drinks Industry.

From the booming trade of the newly modernised Jameson Whiskey, to the craft beer brewery that’s heading into its 21st year, the drinks industry in Ireland is going from strength to strength.

So how about the pub tycoon who swoops in on ailing pubs and divvies out the ultimate makeover? That’s the life of Noel Anderson, who told The Capital B’s Nick Webb all about his life as the grim reaper of the Irish pub scene.

Three years ago alongside Irish International rugby players Sean O’Brien, Jamie Heaslip, and brothers Rob and Dave Kearney,  Noel bought the old Bellamy’s in Ballsbridge.

They took it, shut it down, did a complete refurb and hey presto! The Bridge 1859 was born.

Speaking about Bellamy’s, Noel told The Capital B that it became a tired brand and it was time for a change. He also told Nick that he has no faith in the nightclub scene… and that late bars are the way forward;

“If you could get seven years out of a the nightclub you’re doing very well… the business is dead and buried, late bars is where it’s at, people won’t pay seven or 10 euro in to clubs anymore, ”

“I see plenty of people dancing on a Friday or Saturday nights and we don’t have any banging music or twirly flashy nights … for me that’s done and dusted”.

Also on this week’s episode; the panel welcomes the man behind The Carlow Brewing company Seamus O’Hara – an expert in craft beer with over 20 years experience, and they find out from Managing Director Claire Tolan how Jameson is moving with the times and becoming the MUST HAVE drink for hipsters everywhere.
