“I am beyond honoured to continue my dad’s legacy and I hope more than anything that he would be proud.”

Robert Irwin had everyone on Instagram in tears posting a tribute to his dad, Steve Irwin, on his own birthday. Get the box of tissues from the Toy Show back out for this one!

To mark the day, Robert shared a video of him working alongside his dad tending to some animals. The caption reads: “Our lovely Australia Zoo crew made this beautiful video to celebrate my birthday, and it means the world to me ❤️.”

“I am beyond honoured to continue my dad’s legacy and I hope more than anything that he would be proud. I want to thank you for all of your lovely birthday messages and thanks to all who joined us for the celebrations at Australia Zoo today.”

He finished the caption with “looking forward to seeing what this next year brings, in the last year of my childhood!”

Robert’s famous crocodile hunting dad died while out diving off the coast of Australia in 2006. In the video, Steve can be heard talking about becoming a father for the second time, “at that very moment, I saw the light.”

“When Bindi was born, I had the same sensation there with little Bob,” he said. “When they’re ready to run up our mission, I will gladly step aside.”

“Then and only then will I know that I achieved my ultimate goal,” he continued. “And my job will be done, and I guarantee you, it will be the proudest moment of my life.”

Terri, Robert’s mum, also wished her son a happy birthday via Twitter saying: “Today you are seventeen. May the simple things in life always bring you happiness. Every day you make me happy. And proud. And I will love you beyond forever.”
