3 simple ways to feel full of energy (even if you didn’t get enough sleep)

Trine Jensen-Burke

how to have more energy

OK, so we know getting enough sleep is important.

Sleep is how our body restores and regenrates itself, heals sickness, helps us feel alert and focused and basically prepares us to get up and slay the next day. Sleep is also when our digestive system gets to rest and re-set, making sure we can maintain a healthy weight.

In other words; sleep is pretty darn important for our overall health and wellness.

However, as we are all so painfully aware, it can sometimes be a bit of a struggle to get enough shut-eye when you are a mum and have your hands (and head and bed) full of kids and timetables and to-do lists. Not to mention having a baby who wakes you through the night and a toddler who thinks it’s acceptable to get up (long!) before the sun rises.

Yawn. It’s no wonder you feel shattered, mama.

The good news? There are ways to deal with that horrible foggy feeling of not having slept nearly enough. Here are three easy hacks to get you going in the morning (even without resorting to five espressos).

1. Get moving (preferably outside)

Don’t underestimate the power of fresh air and exercise when it comes to shaking that heavy, tired feeling you get from waking up after a night of little sleep.

A power walk (could you walk to work, maybe?) or a quick run will do wonders for your energy levels, but if this is tricky, get out on your garden or balcony and do a couple of jumping jacks followed by some yoga stretches – and you’ll soon get your blood pumping, which will increase circulation and give you a much-needed energy boost.

Why outside? Because both natural daylight – and the dose of vitamin D you’ll get from the sun – will make you feel more awake and alert.

2. Super-charge your breakfast

Step away from the coffee, mama.

Yes, we know – it’s all too easy to just reach for the java when we are feeling lethargic and sleepy, but did you know that you can eat your way to feeling more awake? It’s true. Whether you need a morning pick-me-up or you’re falling into that dreaded afternoon slump, eating the right foods can help combat that fatigue and have you feeling more energized, focused, and alert.

What to eat? Keeping your energy levels steady is important if you’re feeling exhausted, so opt for whole foods over a sugary bar or a quick processed meal. Oatmeal is a great choice, as are vitamin-packed smoothies with berries, for a burst of natual energy. Add a banana, as they are high in complex carbohydrates, natural sugar, and amino acids, making them a great natural energy booster.

We also love nut butters, as these are great for maintaining energy levels, and leafy greens (again, great in a smoothie) which will provide energy, protein, and fibre and are loaded with antioxidants.

3. Power up with essential oils

Essential oils are having a big moment (huge, in fact) and everyone and anyone who is into health and wellness at the moment is on board.

The best way to get you going in the morning is probably to use a few drops in a diffuser and literally let the scent surround you and make you feel more awake and alert. Aromatherapy experts always recommend oils like Lime, Grapefruit & Orange (citrus-y oils, in other words) to make you feel more energetic.

Other options include herbal scents like peppermint and eucalyptus for an energy boost because they help promote deep breathing, which in turn oxygenates the brain and paves the way for an increase in alertness.
