Eat your skin better: 10 foods that will rehydrate you from the inside out

Two-thirds of our body is made up of water.

And did you know, when you start to feel thirsty, you’ve already lost as much as 2 – 3 percent of your body fluid. Meaning, not only do you start to feel tired and low on energy, but your skin start suffering too. To preserve water for your internal organs, your body starts drawing moisture from your skin – leaving it dry, dull and far more prone to wrinkles too.

Drinking enough water is the most important thing we can do to replenish ourselves, but the good news is that lots of fruit and vegetables too have a high water content. To up your fluid intake, try including more of these delicious treats in your diet – and watch your skin reap the benefits too:

1. Watermelon

Summer's most perfect healthy snack is also a powerhouse when it comes to hydration. Watermelon contains as much as 92 percent water, and we love how versatile it is. Cut into wedges and eat as is, use it in salads and blend it up with some ice, sparkling water, a dash of lime and a drop of agave syrup for summer's most refreshing slushie.

2. Spinach

We love to include spinach in our diet for the amazing nutritional punch it packs. Packed with nutrients like magnesium, potassium, and B-vitamins, spinach is the perfect super-food. It is also great for your hydration levels, as it contains as much as 92 percent water.

As well as this, spinach is also a good source of iron, which is essential for helping to transport oxygen around your body, and for keeping your immune system healthy.

3. Strawberries

With a water content of more than 90 percent, strawberries don't only taste like summer, they are also great for keeping your complexion hydrated in the hot weather. As well as hydration, strawberries are actually a natural remedy for whitening your teeth!

4. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are made up of 95 percent water, meaning they are literally like edible water. As well as this, these juicy red fruits (yep, tomatoes are a fruit!) are also a good source of vitamin A, which is important for keeping your skin, eyes and immune system healthy.

5. Cucumber

Containing a whopping 96 percent water, cucumber is the hero of hydrating foods. It is also chock-a-block with vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant and known to protect your skin from the inside out.

6. Pineapple

Another natural sweet treat that is full of gorgeous hydration for your skin. Pineapple is a great hot weather treat to keep you hydrated, and actually has some rather impressive benefits for your digestion and immune system too.

7. Broccoli

Steam them as a side dish for dinner or stick them in a salad for lunch, did you know the humble broccoli contains as much as 90 percent water, as well as lots of important nutrients, including Vitamin K, Vitamin A, iron, calcium and folic acid.

8. Grapefruit

Fresh, tart and deliciously refreshing – grapefruits have a high water content, and will give your skin some much-needed hydration, as well as provide you with a great big dose of vitamin C.

9. Apples

The perfect portable snack, apples are a hydration superfood, containing about 85 percent water. As well as this, apples are also low in calories, and a source of vitamins, fibre and antioxidants.

10. Blueberries

As well as being a source of fibre, vitamins and minerals, blueberries are also made up of 84 percent water. Berries are a great source of antioxidants, which help to protect your cells from being damaged.
