Christmas has come and gone.

All that prep work, all the shopping, all the cooking, all the doing and sorting and sending and managing.

Now it is all over for another year and although most of us often do breathe a little sigh of relief when Christmas arrives and we can finally lower our December-tense shoulders, there is also this slight tint of sadness that our favourite season has come and gone.

And now we are facing into January, February and March, and a whole lot of cold, rain and empty bank accounts before the warm air of spring arrives to lift our moods again.

But don't feel blue. Happiness, as they say, is not a destination – it is a journey, and there are plenty of things you can do to trick yourself into feeling happier – in an instant.

And guess what, making sure you feel happy might just be the single most important thing you can do for your health, both physical and mental, making it just as necessary as diet and physical activity.

And while the reward is a happier you, of course, know that everyone around you will also benefit from you being your happiest, most positive self.

1. Make a list of things you’re grateful for

Stopping for a minute and thinking of all the great things and amazing people in your life will probably put any silly complaints you had to rest.

3. Meet a friend

Grab a coffee, go to a yoga class together, or just take a walk in the park. Life is happier when we spend it with people we care about.

4. Cook something

Even if you're not the best chef, cooking or baking a great stress relief, and also, if you cook something for someone else, the happiness effect will be double!
