Weekend vibes: 17 little things to do on a Sunday that you'll thank yourself for next week

Ah, Sundays.

Possibly the loveliest, cosiest, most hygge-filled day of the week. When we have time for long, lazy breakfasts (maybe even brunch!), walks, watching TV in her pyjamas and generally just shutting off from the world and feeling our shoulders sink back down again to where they belong.

However, Sunday is also, I think, I great opportunity to prepare for the week ahead. And don't worry – I am not saying spend all day ironing or cleaning or deleting work e-mails. Instead, just pick a few tasks (feel free to steal some from the list below), some practical, some just pure enjoyable, and spend a few precious Sunday moments on these. You might just find it will invigorate you, calm you, make you happier and possible also more organized and prepared for the week ahead.

1. Deep clean one room in your house

It's easier to commit to doing one room properly than to say you are going to spring clean your entire house. Pick and room and get to work – and once you see who great it makes you feel once it's done, you might want to keep going with another room tomorrow – or next week.

2. Put on some teeth-whitening strips

We love these ones from Spotlight.

3. Stretch

Lay on your bedroom floor, (or yoga mat, if you got one) and just do some stretching. You'll instantly feel more zen.

4. Go buy some plants at your local garden centre

Plants are not only the trendiest thing you can have in your home right now, they are also serious happiness booster (yes, really) – and they make the air in your house better.

5. Do an edit of your closet

Getting dressed in the mornings will be SO much easier. Plus knowing what you have and what you may need will make getting to right stuff when you hit the shops easier too.  And don't hold back—toss/donate anything that's worn, doesn't fit, or that you won't ever wear again

6. Throw out old newspapers and magazines

We all know how quickly they can accumulate.

7. Diffuse some essential oils

The wellness brigade is all over essential oils at the moment, and for good reason. Essential oils can have a profound positive impact on your health, emotional state, the functioning of the nervous system and all sorts of good things.

But don't use an oil burner (remember those from a few years back when they did the rounds?). Heat denature those chemical compounds which create a therapeutic response and you're left with nothing but a pretty smell. Instead, order one of these clever (and super-stylish diffusers).

8. Write out your agenda for next week – and stick it to the fridge

Knowledge is power, and you'll feel so much more in control knowing how your week is looking. Pencil in anything from meetings to yoga classes and even bills that need paying – and you'll start the week off feeling you are running your days, not the other way around.

9. Empty your handbag(s)

You won't believe how much junk is in there.

10. Make a DIY moisture mask for your hair

Just mix a tablespoon of olive oil into 1/4 cup of full-fat yoghurt. Apply to wet hair, leave on for 20 minutes, then rinse well.

11. Prepare some fruit-infused water for the week

Such an easy way to make sure you drink more water. Just chop up your favourite fruits, put in a glass bottle or jug, add water and leave in the fridge to infuse. YUM! PS: Love the combination of grapefruit and mint.

12. Go for a walk

Fresh air and exercise, and maybe even the chance to listen to some music or your favourite podcast, science says walks are good for the soul.

13. Do a quick stock-take of your fridge

Write down any essentials you might need to buy more of (ketchup, almond milk, parmesan), and then try to work out what you want to eat for dinners this week – aim to use stuff you already have that needs to be used up (vegetables that need to be eaten this week), then write out your weekly shopping list.

14. Call your mum (or an old friend)

Texts and Whats-Apps are great, but they can not beat hearing the voice of someone you care about.

15. Create a new playlist

Music is such a powerful tool to lift our mood, relax us or give us energy. Assemble play-lists for the commute, for working out and one for putting on when you walk through the door in the evening that will immediately make you lower your shoulders and relax.

16. Change the sheets on your bed

Nothing – literally nothing – is as nice as going to bed in fresh, clean sheets.

17. Make some bliss-balls or energy bars

And you'll have something healthy to snack on all week. We love these freezer chia-quinoa bars.
