Court bans couple from naming their newborn baby Lucifer

Not sure why you'd want that name...

A German court has ordered a couple not to call their son Lucifer.

The issue arose when they went to the registry office in their home city of Kassel in central Germany to register the newborn baby’s name.

The official there refused to put the name Lucifer on the baby’s birth certificate as it could put the baby’s welfare in danger, according to the Local.

The parents would not budge on the name and entered into a dispute that lasted for months.

This week in a hearing at the local district court, the couple relented and decided to call the baby Lucien.

The word ‘Lucifer’ literally translates as ‘morning star’ or ‘light-bringing’ from Latin, but is a name given to the devil in the Bible.

There are no baby names that are banned in Germany but any name must be approved by the local registrar.

Earlier in the week, news broke that a couple had been reported to authorities in France for naming their newborn son Jihad.

The word literally means ‘striving’ or ‘struggling’ in Arabic but has been used by Islamist extremists as a word for a fight against non-believers.

The new mum and dad, who live in the Toulouse suburb of Léguevin, were reported after trying to register the name at their town hall.
