Dad thinking of changing toddler’s name as people assume she is named after something odd

Yikes.

Keeley Ryan

Many thought he was overreacting.

A dad has admitted he’s thinking of changing his 16-month-old daughter’s name – as he is worried she will be bullied for it when she is older.

The parent explained that he and his partner loved the name Alexa when they first picked it – until the home gadget with the same name was released, and ruined the name.

The concerned dad claims that people make jokes about his daughter’s name and that it may get worse when she starts school.

So, he turned to NetMums for “opinions and thoughts on what is a VERY tricky subject”.

According to The Mirror, he wrote:

“We had our first child and named her Alexa, this was just before Amazon decided to release their pointless gadget which it now seems is taking over the world.

“Anyway, our little girl is now approaching 16 months old and is aware of her name and talks extremely fluently, and more times than not when you’re asked what her name is by someone new they make reference to having one at home, or say something similar which is annoying and frustrating.

“Life growing up and at school can be hard enough, so we’re reluctantly considering changing her name to save her years of bullying/teasing etc.”

The couple even thought of changing their toddler’s name to Alex, as it “would be easier”.

He continued:

“We may go for a complete change to something different as we’re not keen on Alex.

“Of course we will ultimately make this decision ourselves but I’m the kind of person that likes to gauge peoples opinion to help me make up my mind.

“We love the name Alexa but are really worried she will hate it and need to think of her, not us.”

Many of the commenters felt that the dad was ultimately being ridiculous and needed to let it go – especially since it would be confusing for the child to have her name changed now.

Others even gave him suggestions on how to deal with comments about his daughter’s name in the future.

One person wrote:

“The next time you get a smart remark about that electronic gadget, you could say that if you had had £5.00 every time someone had said that to you, you would be a very rich man by now…

“Or that your Alexa is older than Amazon’s and they should have asked you first.”
