Lidl has developed a farm experience where schools can visit and children can learn important lessons about growing fruit and vegetables.
The farm experience is based at its Newbridge distribution centre in County Kildare. The project has been supported by Agri Aware and one of Lidl’s key suppliers Meade Farm.
School kids can visit the educational resource for free, which has been praised by both parents and teachers given the ongoing cost of living crisis.
School tours are an expense many parents cannot afford, but a resource like this is exactly what they need.
Visitors will be brought into a specially made facility to learn about how the retailer sources local produce, and how crops grow.
They will also get a practical demo of crop growing.
Pupils will also be offered tours of the Lidl distribution centre.
The Lidl team hopes the facility will help promote healthy eating, as well as sustainability.
Speaking about the project, Lidl CEO J.P. Scally said, “The Lidl Farm will provide an excellent opportunity for the school children of Ireland to gain a better understanding of where their food comes from.
“Throughout the month of September, we have had hundreds of children visit the Lidl Farm for trial tours.
“We are now pleased to officially open the farm. We look forward to welcoming thousands of more students in the coming years.”
Schools can book tours via the farm’s booking system. The tours are free, but schools will need to cover their own transport costs.
The tours are aimed at 2nd to 6th classes.
Schools will be able to visit The Lidl Farm during the months of September, and October and from April until the end of the school year in June.
