Drinking this particular cocktail is pretty risky…

Katie Mythen-Lynch

This shouldn’t really come as a surprise, but…

A new study has proven, without a doubt, that mixing your booze with an energy drink on a night out is more likely to leave you with an injury the next morning.

If you were under the impression that those vodka Red Bulls or Jägerbombs were no more dangerous than, say, a mojito, think again.

When researchers at the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of British Columbia analysed 13 peer-reviewed studies, they found that people who mixed their alcohol with energy drinks experienced more car accidents, falls, fights and, er… outbursts.

“The stimulant effects of caffeine mask the result that most people get when they drink,” says lead study author Audra Roemer.

“Usually when you’re drinking alcohol, you get tired and you go home. Energy drinks mask that, so people may underestimate how intoxicated they are, end up staying out later, consume more alcohol, and engage in risky behaviour and more hazardous drinking practices.”

The lesson? We’ll stick with the beer, thanks
