Help is on hand!

As exciting as the back to school period is, it can also be a stressful time for parents, particularly where money is concerned.

Those back to school costs can all add up, which is why we’ve teamed up with HelloFresh to bring you some tips to help cut back this September. From availing of financial supports to giving school uniforms a second life, there are a few things you can do to take some of the pressure off this back-to-school season.

See if you’re eligible for help with school costs

Depending on your family’s financial situation, you may be able to get help with school costs through a number of government initiatives. For instance, parents of children in primary and special schools no longer have to pay for schoolbooks, workbooks and copy books. These are now provided on loan through the Free Primary Schoolbooks scheme. Additionally, some families may be able to avail of financial help through the Back To School Clothing and Footwear Allowance.

Go second-hand

Opting to source uniforms second-hand isn’t just kind to the planet, but it’s kind to your wallet as well. See if parents in the school are willing to sell uniforms their children have outgrown on to you. Sell on the items that no longer fit your children to make a few bob as well.

Cut back on food waste

It can be really disheartening to waste food, particularly when you’re trying to cut back on costs. Planning your meals and school lunches for the week can help you budget better, and services like HelloFresh can help you reduce food waste and cut down on shopping trips.

Do an inventory before you buy

You might feel pressure to buy everything new ahead of the return to school, but take stock of what you have first. Try on last year’s clothes, see if you really do need new stationary and do an inventory on your current containers before splashing out on a brand new lunchbox.

Keep your eyes peeled for sales

In the weeks leading up to September, many shops will be offering great deals on back to school essentials, so keep your eyes peeled and you may be able to cut back on costs.

Avoid impulse buys

Only buy what you need this back to school season, and avoid the impulse buys that are inevitably made on hungry shopping trips. Write a list according to your budget and your needs and stick to it.
