Do these 8 things to make your fake tan last much, much longer

Anna Rourke

Yes, we know we’re inside all the time and yes, we know no-one will be seeing us but that doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned our beloved fake tan.

A bit of a glow always makes us feel better so we’re prioritising tanning while in isolation and no-one can tell us otherwise.

Want to know how to get the most out of your tan? After years of practice, we’ve picked up a few tricks and we thought now would be a good time to share them.

You can thank us later.

1. Choose a tan that suits you

Just like with makeup, we’ve found that some tans that work for others just won’t do the job for us. If you think fake tan just doesn’t last 0n your skin, try other brands and we guarantee you’ll find something that’ll stick.

2. Exfoliate beforehand

Ditch the loofah, buy yourself a pair of exfoliating gloves and give yourself a good scrub.

3. Apply a body oil before showering

You can still wash as normal but this will protect your colour.

4. Pat yourself dry after showering

Or if you can air dry a little, even better.

5. Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise

You don’t have to spend a lot – just put time into moisturising all over and it’ll pay dividends. Using a gradual tanning moisturiser after a few days will also help you to maintain your tan.

6. Avoid shaving

It might seem obvious but any kind of abrasion on your skin will lift the tan off.

7. Avoid tight clothes

This may not be that feasible but tight leggings or jeans will rub against the tan and start to take it off.

8. Exfoliate gently

When your tan does begin to fade, exfoliate very gently with a wet facecloth to ensure it wears off evenly. Pay special attention to your knees, ankles, wrists, elbows and anywhere tan builds up as these can look crusty after a few days.
