It turns out the fountain of youth may actually be sitting in your wine rack.
Due to everything being closed for lock down, most of us have been giving ourselves little treats at home to stave off the stress of isolation.
I’ve definitely noticed a definite rise in the amount of chocolate I’ve been eating and having a glass of wine over the weekend out the back garden has become my new night out.
If you’re the same, don’t worry because there may actually be benefits to wine and a bit of chocolate.
Research has found that one common property, essential for the rejuvenation of your skin can be found in some commonly consumed food and drink.
The food and drink with the highest concentration of this ingredient being red wine and chocolate.
A study carried out by the Universities of Exeter and Brighton showed that red wine and chocolate contain a substance called resveratrol.
The research found that old human cells can be rejuvenated using chemicals similar to resveratrol, so by consuming foods containing this natural chemical compound you could be helping to replenish your skin.
One of the researchers of the study published in BMC Cell Biology, Eva Latorre, wrote;
“When I saw some of the cells in the culture dish rejuvenating I couldn’t believe it. These old cells were looking like young cells. It was like magic.
I repeated the experiments several times and in each case, the cells rejuvenated. I am very excited by the implications and potential for this research.”
If any of the potentials for this research means I can chuck out all my skincare products and stock up on chocolate I’m all for it!
All that said please do remember to drink responsibly and consume moderate amounts of alcohol as part of a balanced diet.
