We love nothing more than sprinkling a handful of pre-grated Parmesan cheese over a bowl of spaghetti Bolognese but we might buy a block and grate it ourselves after hearing about this.
While the warning has been issued to consumers in America by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s one of those things that makes you a little paranoid regardless of where you live.
Bloomberg conducted a number of tests on products claiming to be “100 per cent Parmesan.” What they found was that some contained products that weren’t Parmesan… or in fact cheese.

Many contained traces of cheaper cheeses, such as cheddar or mozzarella, while others had fillers such as cellulose or wood pulp.
According to reports, this has been happening for years and investigations are ongoing.
Like we said, the tests were done in the US and there is nothing to suggest that this happens in Ireland… still, we might take a closer look at our grated Parmesan before we sprinkle it tonight.
