“Officers were called to the scene of the incident at Fountain Lane at around 6.20 pm today, Thursday, 28 July.

“The young girl’s parents have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time. Her family will be supported by specialist-trained officers.

The scene has now been cordoned off so a forensics team can conduct an examination.

Tributes have been pouring in for the young girl since news of her untimely death emerged.

“Bless her. RIP sweetheart, sending love to her family as well as the ambulance crew and police officers who attended this.”

One mum also wrote, “9. She was just 9. I cannot comprehend that a 9-year-old is ever at risk of being stabbed.”
