10 killed and many more injured in St Petersburg Metro explosion

At least ten people are dead and many more are injured after an explosion on the underground in the Russian city of St Petersburg.

According to witnesses, the blast tore through the Sennaya Ploshchad station. Horrifying images shared on social media show desperate victims trapped in the wreckage of the train as others attempt to free the injured.

Early reports suggest that at least 50 people have been hurt in the blast, which killed at least ten. Several other underground stations have now been closed and an evacuation is underway.

According to Interfax news agency the explosion may have been caused by a bomb filled with shrapnel.

Vladimir Putin is currently in St Petersburg, where he was scheduled due to meet with Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko this afternoon. The Kremlin has confirmed the President has been informed of the explosion.
