Wexford people rally around 11-year-old boy after strawberry stand robbery

Wexford businesses have come out to support an 11-year-old strawberry seller after a roadside robbery

Conor Goucher was left “shaken” after a jeep pulled up beside his strawberry stand on the roadside in Ferrybank, Co Wexford and made off with his money.

One of the females kept him distracted by asking him about his produce, while a second woman went behind Conor and stole €250 from his cash box. He heard the floorboards of the shack squeaking and turned to questioned the woman, who then drove off in the jeep with the days takings.

Conor told Newstalk: “The daughter got out of the car and started asking me all the prices, and then the mother hopped out of the Jeep and went in and got all the money from the box.”

A passerby was able to help Conor alert the robbery to Gardai, as Conor explains: “I was just kind of left shaken. I didn’t know what to do. I just rang my mam and then a person walking by, she rang the Gardai and they came out then.”

Hearing about the incident, local businesses came out in force to support Conor: “The hotels and all the cafes, they came out and bought strawberries from me and started doing strawberries and ice cream just to help me kind of.”

Conor is about to start sixth class at Castlebridge National School. Despite his young age, the budding entrepreneur set up his own business selling strawberries in the summer and potatoes in the winter.

Good man, Conor. We suspect you’ll go far.
