Boy accused of rape at age 14 appears before Dublin children’s court

The alleged incidents took place in Dublin in 2019

An unnamed 16-year-old boy appeared before Judge John Lindsay at the Dublin Children’s Court yesterday, charged with rape and sexual assault that allegedly took place in Dublin two years ago, when he was just 14 years old.

The incident allegedly occurred on a date in August 2019, at two locations in north Dublin and Garda Niamh Reynolds told the court the boy “made no reply to charge after caution”.

His arrest today follows the Director of Public Prosecutions’ decision that he is to face trial on indictment.

Because of the rape charge, the case will go before the Central Criminal Court. A preliminary hearing is to be held to decide if the second charge should also go forward to the higher court as well, or remain in the Children’s Court, after a book of evidence is completed by the State.

The boy was accompanied to court by his mother and is ordered to appear again next month after bail conditions were imposed.

Judge John Lindsay gave the boy two days to surrender his passport and warned him he must not contact the complainant, directly or indirectly.
