A 16-year-old Boy Has Been Arrested In Connection With Derry Murder

Sharyn Hayden

Emergency services called to the Milldale Crescent area of Derry last night discovered two twenty-four year old men who had been seriously injured in an assault.

Both men were taken to nearby Altnagelvin hospital, where one of the injured men later died.

While the second man has also sustained head injuries, the PSNI have stated that they are not believed to be life-threatening.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested just after midnight last night, in connection with the man’s death in what is now being called a ‘murder’.

DCI Michael Harvey is urging anyone with information pertaining to the murder to come forward.

“This has resulted in the tragic death of a young man, therefore I would ask anyone in the community who knows anything about the circumstances leading up to this incident, or saw or heard an altercation in the Milldale Crescent area, to contact police and give us this information,” he said.

The local community is understood to be in shock following the incident.

While we are awaiting further information on this story, it strikes me that street attacks seem to be on the increase in almost every county in Ireland.

In particular, our young men seem to be terribly vulnerable to this kind of violence and it really makes me fear for my own young son’s future safety.
