An Indian woman has become the “world’s oldest mother” after giving birth to a baby weighing just 1lb 5oz.

75-year-old Prabha Devi welcomed her first child – a baby girl – via C-section last week in Kota’s private Kinker Hospital in Rajasthan.

The infant had to be delivered prematurely due to her mother’s deteriorating health.

Mail Online reports that Devi and her 80-year-old husband conceived their firstborn via IVF treatment 30 weeks ago.

The couple already have one adopted child.

Dr Abhilasha Kinker, who delivered the child, said that a premature birth was necessary due to the mother’s health related issues.

“Prabha Devi had come to our hospital four to five days before the delivery,” he said.

‘We found there were complications in her pregnancy so we decided to deliver the child through Cesarean section.

“She was ill and old and we couldn’t take chances with her and the child’s life. She had already carried the child for over six months which was very surprising for her age.”

Dr Kinker added that if they had not delivered the baby, “she might have died in the womb.”

The hospital did not confirm Devi’s age as she was not asked to present ID at the hospital.

This comes after a 74-year-old Indian woman gave birth to twins following a successful round of IVF.

Erramatti Mangayamma gave birth to two baby girls over one month ago in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh.

She had struggled to become pregnant naturally so opted to undergo IVF in her 70s.

Mangayamma had already gone through the menopause, so doctors had to use an egg donor to continue with the process.

“She could not succeed in her attempts to conceive even after visiting several hospitals,” said her doctor, Dr Umashankar.

“Even after she attained menopause nearly 25 years ago, she had a strong desire to become a mother. She decided to try the method and approached us. We were surprised at her willpower.”

Both mother and twins are said to be doing well.
