A Limerick six-year-old has become Ireland’s youngest Mensa member

Right now he’s more interested in soccer than quantum physics, but John Fitzgerald (age six) is officially Ireland’s youngest Mensa member.

The Kildimo youngster’s parents Barry and Annemaria noticed he might have special talents when he could recite the alphabet and the 12 times tables and remember the words to Beatles songs in full by the time he turned three years old.

He was first assessed at four years-of-age on the recommendation of his Montessori school teacher, who spotted that his reading level was far above average. Now at just six years old, John reads at the same level as a 16-year-old.

The football fanatic is currently in senior infants at Kilcornan National School but on his teachers’ advice, he will skip a year and move into second class next year.

After that? Watch this space.
