There are almost 1,000 homeless children living in Dublin, according to the latest figures.

Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE) says 411 families with 911 children were living in emergency accommodation between March 23 and 29. Of those, 160 of the families had two parents while 251 were single parent families.

The latest figures represent a significant increase on the previous month when there were 371 families with 803 children living in emergency accommodation in the capital.

Rent hikes in the private sector are partially to blame, with rents for houses rising from an average of €1,216 to €1301 in 2014.

Since last year, there has been a 55% increase in the number of homeless families living in Dublin.
