An Irish blogger and Mum of three has made a heartfelt appeal to the public to support a cause that means a great deal to her family.
HerFamily.ie contributor Geraldine Renton‘s eldest son Ethan suffers from Hunter Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects males almost exclusively.
Children with Hunter Syndrome don’t have enough of a certain enzyme to break down certain complex molecules, which then build up in harmful amounts in certain cells and tissues. The build-up eventually causes permanent, progressive damage affecting appearance, mental development, organ function and physical abilities.
As a result, children with Hunter Syndrome rarely live beyond their teens.
Writing on her website, Geraldine Renton, said:
“I have watched my first born, my beautiful …smart…funny Ethan, forget the names of his family members. I have watched him forget what a cup is. I am watching him struggle with feeding…his words…his breathing… his walking…all because there is not enough money to fund vital research into Hunter Syndrome.”
