An armed officer that was on duty at the Florida school where 17 people were killed never went inside to engage with the gunman, US reports are stating.
The police officer has now been has been placed under investigation for failing to intervene.
The shooting took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day when a gunman armed with an AR-15 assault rifle walked into the school and started randomly shooting.
Broward County Sheriff, Scott Israel, said that the officer was on duty, and stationed at the school, and even though the building was under attack, he “never went in.”
The sheriff continued to say that he is deeply saddened by the whole thing. “Devastated, sick to my stomach. There are no words. I mean these families lost their children. I’ve been to the funerals. I’ve been to the vigils. There are no words.”
The shooting has caused a national – and worldwide – debate over gun control, with students around the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School area protesting to have them banned.
The on duty officer, Scot Peterson, has been suspended without pay and placed under investigation, however he has sign chose to resign from the force.
