This is the average amount of money that kids receive on their Holy Communion

Rudi Kinsella

Did your child receive this much?

Communion day is the pinnacle of every Irish kid’s childhood. You and the kids are always excited for the day (however, we won’t even talk about the prep that goes into it!).

Whether your child wants to spend their money on a flashy toy, a new doll, or astutely saves it in their sock drawer, the question in school the following Monday is always “Well? How much did you get?”

But according to a recent survey conducted by Ulster Bank, kids these days have absolutely no reason to be doing any exaggerating.

The average Irish child receives a healthy €558 just for making their Communion. Not too shabby.

Funnily enough, 68 percent of parents feel their child received too much money, and one in five parents think some of the money received should go towards the cost of the day.

Although the overall amount of money that children are receiving is down €12 from last year, children spending their money on computer games has more than doubled.

The full breakdown of the spending is as follows:

  • Party refreshments: €349
  • Child’s outfit for the day: €162
  • Outifits for other family members: €153
  • Children’s entertainment: €161
  • Make-up/ hair: €35
