Baby and toddler among 4 killed in Barcelona fire at abandoned bank

Tragic news from Spain.

A baby and toddler were among the four people who died in a fire in Barcelona on Tuesday.

The fire broke out at around 6am at an abandoned bank occupied by squatters, killing a family of four.

Firefighters said the victims were “two adults, a baby and a three-year-old child”, with a Barcelona city hall employee later confirming they were all from the same family.

Another four people were rescued from the scene and are currently being treated for smoke inhalation.

The blaze has since been extinguished and nobody else is believed to be trapped inside.

“There are no words to describe the horror of the death of these four people, including two small children,” said the city’s mayor, Ada Colau.

“This is something that should never happen.”

She added that those occupying the premises had been living in “very precarious conditions”.

The Barcelona city hall employee said the building was squatted in a practice that some vulnerable families in the area resort to when unable to pay for accommodation.
