‘Barrel Bomb’ Strikes As Mourners Were Burying Dead Children

Sharyn Hayden

We wrote about little Omran, the child in the back of the ambulance after the air strikes in Aleppo, with tears running down our cheeks at every touch of the keyboard.

That isn’t an over-dramatic statement, it is a fact. Only the coldest heart could have felt unaffected by his little face, his bloody head, his apparent loneliness as he sat there, waiting for the rest of his family to be carried in.

When we later learned that his older brother died from injuries sustained during the attack, we cried again.

We cried for Omran, for his brother, for his parents and other siblings – we cried for them all.

But these kinds of news stories are far from over.

Last Thursday, a barrel bomb attack killed 11 children and 4 adults in Aleppo, Syria.

And yesterday, regime aircraft saw fit to drop two explosive-packed barrels and blast a tent in which a wake was taking place for those that had just been killed.

Imagine mourning the loss of your children and loved ones and being under attack again?

According to reports, at least a further 15 people lost their lives this time.

Sky News Foreign Affairs Editor Sam Kiley said this kind of assault is known as the ‘double tap’ in Aleppo.

It essentially means luring rescue workers and mourners to one spot and attacking them a second time.

We can’t imagine what these families are going through.
